Cross Counter shines at the Melbourne Cup

The British bred horse was at the helm of affairs after a convincing win at the Melbourne Cup and sealed Godolphin’s name in the history books. Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was extremely delighted with how Cross Counter had performed. This is McEvoy’s third club trophy. In a field of 24, Cross Counter set ablaze an otherwise rain drenched two-mile track at the Flemington Recourses. Cross Counter is the first English-trained horse to have won the coveted Melbourne Cup, and cashed in $2.8 million in the meantime.

The English horses were on a roll as the podium showcased an all English domination with Marmelo and A Prince of Arran securing the second and third place respectively. Godolphin is Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s venture and registering their first win on such a grant stage. Charlie Appleby, trainer of Cross Counter became the first English trainer to lift the Melbourne Cup, and he praised Godolphin and its leader as the training conditions provided by them had helped Cross Counter’s development.

Melbourne Cup may not be a boon to everyone

The coveted Melbourne Cup sees most of the roads in Australia come to a standstill, but that does not bode well for many and quite a handful of Aussie businessmen have voiced their opinion to go against the race. Sydney’s Newtown Hotel is at the forefront of this ‘f**k the Cup’ movement initiated through Facebook about a month ago. People have vehemently supported the movement against a ‘historic’ race. Voicing against horse cruelty, which has seen quite a number of horses either being euthanized or rendered immobile. Coparing it with greyhound racing and animal abuse users took it to Facebook and expressed their feelings in the comment section.

However, many dubbed this as Anti-Australian and a Hipster act to look cool. This has triggered a massive comments section which has also been taken to Twitter by many. People have pointed out Newtown Hotel’s hypocrisy as they have meat in their menu, but all of a sudden take part in the animal abuse bandwagon.
